Plan first

Changing seasons often means pulling out all the bedding and clothes from winter, which stirs up much more dust than usual. It is best to do one room at a time and spread the work over two days, so you do not work too long at once. When your symptoms are not well controlled, try not to do heavy cleaning, or ask family members to do the key steps for you.

Recommended order

  • Open the windows to air the room in advance, wear a well-fitting mask, and wear goggles if needed
  • First put away winter fabrics: wash them, dry them thoroughly, then store them sealed. Do not just stuff them straight into the cupboard
  • Then do wet cleaning: wipe inside cupboards, under the bed and windowsills with a damp cloth, and mop the floor with a wet mop
  • Finally deal with bedding and curtains, to reduce dust falling again on areas you have already cleaned

Storage and dehumidifying

Choose storage boxes made of well-sealed material. Put desiccant inside cupboards and replace it regularly. Pay special attention to humidity during the plum rain season in the south. The spring pollen peak and the active period of house dust mite may overlap. After going out and coming home, it is best to change your outer clothes, wash your face and rinse your nose, to reduce bringing outdoor pollen into the bedroom. If your symptoms clearly get worse after the season changes, you should go back to the doctor for an assessment, rather than increasing your medicine on your own.
