Do mite-removal devices and mite sprays work? Put your effort where it counts

There are many mite-control products on the market, and their effects vary a lot. The way to judge them is actually simple: can they really reduce allergens, rather than just making people feel reassured?

Look at the principle before the advertising

House dust mite allergy is mainly an allergy to proteins in the mite body and mite droppings. So the goal of control is to remove these allergens from the living space, not to "kill bugs you cannot see". Any product that only emphasises killing germs, removing odours or adding fragrance is not necessarily directly related to reducing allergens.

Beating and vacuuming devices

Vacuum cleaners with high-efficiency filters and special mite-removal heads can remove some allergens from mattresses and fabric surfaces. But note: if an ordinary vacuum cleaner has a poor filter, it can blow fine particles back into the air, causing a short burst of dust exposure instead. How often you use it matters more than the price of the device. It is best to clean on a fixed schedule, and open a window or wear a mask while doing it.

Sprays and disinfectants

Chemical sprays can act on surfaces, but they find it hard to penetrate into the inside of a mattress, so their effect on allergens deep inside is limited. Some strongly scented products may also irritate the airways, which is not friendly for people with asthma. Rather than repeatedly buying new products, it is better to spend your budget and effort on three things: washable mite-proof mattress covers, high-temperature washing, and lowering humidity.
