Air conditioning, humidifiers and air purifiers: how much do they really help with house dust mite?

Home appliances can improve the environment, but each one works in a different way. Use them in the wrong direction and you spend money without seeing results.

Air conditioning

An air conditioner does not remove house dust mite by itself, but by cooling and dehumidifying it can indirectly suppress mite breeding. Note that filters and evaporator coils that are not cleaned for a long time become a place where dust collects and mould grows, and when the unit is switched on it may blow particles into the room. It is best to clean the filter regularly according to the instructions, and to do a thorough clean once before first use when the season changes.

Humidifier

For people with house dust mite allergy, a humidifier needs to be used with care: humidity that stays high for a long time creates the right conditions for mites and mould. If you use one because dryness is causing a dry nose or skin discomfort, use it together with a hygrometer, keep the target at around 50%, change the water every day, and clean the water tank regularly, so that bacteria and mould do not spread with the mist.

Air purifier

A purifier with a high-efficiency filter can reduce particles floating in the air and some allergens, which helps during pollen season and periods of air pollution. But it cannot remove allergens that have settled deep in the mattress or carpet, so it cannot replace washing and vacuuming. When choosing one, pay attention to the filter grade and the area it suits, replace the filter according to the instructions, and avoid a drop in effect once the filter is saturated.
