Re-evaluation of Shellfish Allergy and Changes in Tolerance
Allergy status can change with age. Whether it has changed needs proper assessment, not testing on your own.
Why re-evaluation is needed
For some people, shellfish allergy status can change with age, general health, and past exposure. Some people improve and can tolerate it after many years, while others react more severely. Whether a change has happened needs to be judged through proper assessment.
Factors usually considered in re-evaluation
- How long it has been since the last clear reaction and how severe that reaction was
- Trends in related test results
- Age and what happened after any accidental exposure in the past
- Whether there is a setting where assessment and treatment of a reaction can be done in a medical facility
The right approach
Go to follow-up visits at the times your doctor arranges, and bring your symptom records and past test results. Until your doctor clearly agrees, keep strict avoidance, and pay attention to ingredient lists and cross-contamination. For anyone who has had a severe reaction, any reintroduction should be done in a medical facility with emergency care available.
