Overlooked Indoor Allergens: Mould and Pet Dander
Mould grows in damp corners, and pet dander drifts through the air. Both need environmental management, not just a quick fix.
Mould
Mould spores travel through the air. Common sources include damp bathrooms, under kitchen sinks, inside humidifiers, air-conditioner filters, and mouldy walls. The key to management is controlling humidity, cleaning mould spots promptly, and keeping rooms ventilated. Clean air conditioners and humidifiers regularly.
Pet dander
The real allergens are proteins in pet dander, saliva, and urine. They float through the air on dried skin flakes and can stay in a home for months after a pet has left. "Low-shedding breeds" and "keeping the pet outdoors only" cannot prevent exposure.
Practical approaches
For people allergic to pets, the most effective step is not to keep a pet. If a pet is already in the home, you can try: making the bedroom a pet-free zone, having someone without allergies brush and wash the pet often, using an air purifier with a high-efficiency filter, and cleaning more thoroughly. If symptoms continue, see a doctor for assessment and symptom treatment.
Humidifier reminder
If a humidifier is not cleaned for a long time, mould can grow inside it, which can make allergies worse. Change the water often and clean it regularly, or use dehumidifying methods to manage humidity instead.
