Egg Allergy and Eczema: How Closely Are They Linked?

The two often appear together, but not all eczema is related to egg.

Why they are often discussed together

In infants and young children, moderate to severe eczema and food allergy overlap to some degree, and egg is one of the more common foods involved. When assessing this, doctors consider how severe the eczema is, the pattern of flare-ups, digestive symptoms, immediate reactions after eating, and family history of allergy. This helps them decide whether further tests or a temporary change in diet are needed.

Skin care is the foundation

  • Use enough emollient (moisturizer) every day, and apply it within three minutes of a bath
  • Bathe quickly in warm water; avoid water that is too hot and long soaks
  • Choose soft, pure cotton clothing to reduce rubbing and sweating
  • Use topical treatments as your doctor instructs; do not use strong products on your own for a long time

Do not rush into wide-ranging food avoidance

Avoiding several foods at once may affect a child's nutrition and make it harder to work out what is causing the symptoms. Whether egg needs to be avoided, for how long, and how to review it should be decided by a doctor, with a clear time limit set. If the eczema covers a large area, weeps fluid, or affects sleep, or if there is slow growth or repeated vomiting and diarrhoea, see a doctor as soon as possible.
