Skin signs

Redness around the mouth, hives, and itching soon after eating, or worsening of existing eczema, are all common signs. Some children also have skin reactions after touching raw egg liquid, such as helping to crack eggs or playing with dough.

Digestive tract and breathing signs

  • Vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhoea, and in a few cases blood streaks in the stool
  • Refusing food, or crying and being unsettled after eating
  • Blocked nose, runny nose, cough, and in severe cases wheezing
  • Itching in the mouth and throat, mild swelling of the lips or tongue

Situations that need emergency care

A tight feeling in the throat, difficulty breathing, a hoarse voice, large hives all over the body, repeated vomiting, pale face, or a clear worsening of alertness are signs of anaphylaxis that needs immediate care. Call 120 (the emergency number in China) at once, and follow the emergency plan your doctor has made in advance. Whether to avoid egg yolk and whether baked egg products can be tolerated should be decided by a doctor. Parents are not advised to keep a wide range of foods off the diet for a long time on their own.
