Acute asthma attack: what to do first at home
The order of steps and how medicines are used during an attack directly affect how serious the risk is.
Step 1: Move away from triggers and keep a good position
Immediately leave smoke, cooking fumes, cold air or other suspected irritating surroundings. Sit up or sit leaning back slightly. Loosen the collar and belt. Stay calm and avoid unnecessary walking and talking.
Step 2: Use medicines as planned
- Use the reliever medicine as your doctor has told you before
- After using it, watch whether the symptoms improve
- Record the name, dose and time of the medicine already used, so the emergency team can understand
Step 3: Decide whether to call 120 (the emergency number in China)
Call 120 (the emergency number in China) straight away if any of these happen: it is hard to speak or only single words can be said, breathing is fast, the lips turn blue or purple, the reliever medicine brings no improvement, the person becomes less alert or drowsy, or there is chest pain. While waiting for the emergency team, do not leave the person alone, and do not drive a long distance to hospital yourself.
After the attack
Even after symptoms ease, see a doctor as soon as possible to assess the triggers and whether the plan needs to be adjusted. Do not skip the follow-up visit just because "it has passed".
