Common signs

  • Itchy eyes: often the most obvious and most troublesome symptom
  • Red eyes, mild swelling of the eyelids, congestion of the conjunctiva
  • Watery eyes and increased discharge, usually sticky rather than pus-like
  • A feeling of something in the eye, burning, sensitivity to light
  • Often occurs together with an itchy nose, sneezing and a blocked nose

Differences from infectious conjunctivitis

Allergic conjunctivitis is mainly marked by obvious itching, with discharge that tends to be stringy and sticky. It usually affects both eyes and comes back again and again. Infectious conjunctivitis often starts in one eye, with discharge that is usually yellow-green and pus-like, and it may come with clear pain and swelling of the eyelids. If you are not sure which one it is, see a doctor. Do not use antibacterial eye drops on your own.

When to see a doctor as soon as possible

If you have clear eye pain, loss of vision, worsening sensitivity to light, pus-like discharge, redness around the cornea, or symptoms that do not get better over time, see an eye doctor as soon as possible. If a child often rubs their eyes or blinks a lot, an assessment is also recommended.
