Spring Skin and Pollen: How to Care for an Itchy, Red Face

Facial redness and itching in spring are not always caused by pollen alone. The way you care for your skin has a big effect on symptoms.

Possible sources

Facial discomfort in spring is often caused by several factors adding up: pollen and airborne particles touching the skin directly, stronger ultraviolet light, temperature changes and wind, frequent changes of skincare products, and a skin barrier that is already weak. Whether pollen is the direct cause needs to be judged based on when symptoms start, which areas are affected, and a doctor's assessment.

Basic direction for care

  • Clean gently, and avoid frequent exfoliation and strong irritating products
  • Use moisturising products in enough quantity and several times a day to help maintain the skin barrier
  • Use physical protection when outdoors. Hats, masks and sunshade items are more practical than frequently changing skincare products
  • After getting home, rinse your face with water to reduce particles left on the skin
  • Keep your skincare routine as simple and stable as possible. Test new products on a small area first

When to see a doctor

If your face stays red and swollen, oozes fluid, or feels burning, or if there is still no improvement after two weeks of care, you should see a dermatologist. Eczema, contact dermatitis and seasonal facial dermatitis are treated differently, and a doctor needs to judge which one it is. Using strong topical preparations on your own for a long time may carry risks, and buying and using them without medical advice is not recommended.
