Common signs of peanut allergy: from itching around the mouth to a whole-body reaction
Symptoms usually appear soon after eating, affecting the skin, the digestive tract and the airways.
Common signs
- Itching around the mouth, swelling of the lips or tongue
- Hives and itching on the skin, or existing eczema getting worse
- Nausea, stomach pain, vomiting, diarrhoea
- Itchy nose, sneezing, runny nose, cough, wheezing
- Itchy eyes, watering eyes, swollen eyelids
When symptoms appear
They usually appear from a few minutes to two hours after eating. How mild or severe the symptoms are does not always match how much was eaten. Some people start with mild symptoms that then get worse quickly, so do not relax your watch just because it began with only an itchy mouth.
Situations where you must call 120 (the emergency number in China) right away
Difficulty breathing, a tight feeling in the throat, a hoarse voice, swelling of the lips or throat, large areas of hives all over the body with obvious discomfort, repeated vomiting, pale skin, cold sweats, dizziness or confusion are all signs of anaphylaxis. Call for help immediately and follow the emergency plan. Anyone who has already had a severe reaction needs a doctor to assess whether they should carry emergency medicine and to make a written plan. Even after symptoms ease, they still need to see a doctor for observation.
