Eczema and Diet in Children: Do They Need to Avoid Certain Foods?

Most eczema does not require major food avoidance. Whether it is related to food should be judged by a doctor.

First, tell two things apart

Eczema is the result of the skin barrier and many factors working together. Food allergy does exist at the same time in some children with moderate to severe eczema, but most eczema is not directly caused by food. Whether it is related to a certain food needs to be judged by combining the real reaction after eating with a doctor's assessment.

What should not be done

  • Stopping several foods at the same time, which makes it impossible to find the cause and affects nutrition
  • Avoiding foods on your own based only on test values
  • Avoiding many foods for a long time without follow-up assessment

What can be recorded

Simply record eating, skin changes and time, and bring the suspicious situations to the doctor; when adding complementary foods to infants, introduce them one by one by stage, a small amount each time, and observe for a few days. If the child develops hives, vomiting or breathing discomfort shortly after eating, see a doctor immediately.

Care is still the focus

Whether or not the diet is adjusted, enough moisturising, avoiding irritation and standard medication are all at the core of eczema management.
