Asthma and Other Factors: Gastro-oesophageal Reflux, Weight and Daily Routine
Some seemingly unrelated conditions may also affect how well asthma is controlled.
Factors that may be related
- Gastro-oesophageal reflux: acid reflux, heartburn and night-time choking cough may make symptoms more obvious
- Weight and fitness: higher body weight and less activity may affect control and quality of life
- Sleep and mood: irregular daily routine, anxiety and tension may make symptoms feel worse
- Other conditions: obesity, sinus problems and others need to be assessed together
What to do
Tell your doctor honestly about the related situations you have noticed at your follow-up visit, so the doctor can decide whether further tests or changes to the plan are needed. Things you can do in daily life include: not eating too much at dinner, not eating within two to three hours before bed, raising the head of the bed (if your doctor advises it), keeping a regular daily routine with moderate activity, and controlling your weight.
Do not change your plan on your own
If you notice other factors, do not stop or adjust your asthma medicines on your own because of them. When skin, nasal and digestive symptoms occur at the same time, telling your doctor about all of them together is often better for overall management.
