Everyday care for urticaria (hives): bathing, clothing and itching relief
Reducing outside triggers can clearly lower itching and how often symptoms flare up.
Bathing and skin care
- Use cool or lukewarm water; avoid very hot water and long soaks
- Do not use a scrub towel or strong cleaning products; reduce friction
- Apply an emollient (moisturizer) promptly after washing to keep the skin barrier intact
Clothing and environment
Choose loose, soft pure cotton clothing. Avoid rough fabrics, tight clothing and pressure from belts. Keep rooms ventilated at a suitable temperature, and avoid getting too hot or sweating. If you are sensitive to house dust mite or pet dander, pay attention to cleaning bedding and removing dust indoors.
Itching relief and medicines
When itching is obvious, you can apply a cold towel compress. Avoid scratching, which can cause broken skin and infection. Do not use topical products with unknown ingredients. Use medicines regularly as your doctor advises, and keep a record of your medicines and how your symptoms change. If the wheals keep getting worse, or you have fever or joint pain, or symptoms such as difficulty breathing, see a doctor promptly.
