Common skin signs

  • Redness and itching around the mouth and on the face, starting while eating
  • Hives: raised red patches with clear edges and strong itching, which can appear in groups
  • Local or widespread swelling, often on the eyelids and lips
  • Worsening of existing eczema, with oozing or scratch marks

Care points

Stop eating and rinse the mouth with water; avoid scratching and avoid washing with hot water, and use a cold compress to ease itching; wear loose cotton clothing to reduce rubbing; do not apply anti-itch products of unknown ingredients on your own.

When to see a doctor

Call 120 (the emergency number in China) straight away if any of these happen: difficulty breathing or wheezing, a tight throat, a hoarse voice, swelling of the tongue or throat, repeated vomiting, marked dizziness or reduced alertness. Even if there are only local skin symptoms, it is still best to see a doctor for assessment, to find out the trigger and to learn what to do next. It is not advised to simply rely on topical medicines and push through.
