Peanut oil, peanut butter and refined oil: what needs to be avoided
Peanut products come in different forms. Different processing methods may mean different levels of risk.
Three common forms
- Peanut butter, crushed peanuts, peanut powder: these usually keep more protein, so most people need to avoid them
- Cold-pressed or crude peanut oil: protein may remain, so the risk needs to be assessed for each person
- Highly refined peanut oil: the refining process may remove most of the protein, and some people can tolerate it
Why we cannot treat all peanut products the same
Tolerance differs from person to person. It also depends on how severe past reactions have been. Whether refined oil can be used, and whether dishes cooked with peanut oil can be eaten, should be decided by a doctor based on the individual situation. Do not test this yourself.
Everyday practical advice
When eating out, state that you are "allergic to peanuts and peanut products" and ask what oil is used. At home, if peanut oil is used, keep pots, chopping boards and oil containers separate to reduce cross-contact. When buying packaged food, check the ingredient list and allergen warnings.
