Eczema keeps coming back? First, repair the skin barrier "wall"

The nature of atopic dermatitis is a damaged skin barrier plus immune problems. "Three parts treatment, seven parts care" — using enough emollient (moisturizer) is the basic task throughout.

Eczema is not just "wet"

People with eczema (atopic dermatitis) have a weaker skin barrier. Water is lost through the skin quickly, and outside irritants and allergens get into the skin more easily. This causes itching and inflammation. The "itch—scratch—more itch" cycle makes the skin thicker and more sensitive over time.

Moisturising is the basic task

Using enough emollient (moisturizer), many times a day, is a basic measure that all guidelines agree on: apply within 3 minutes after a bath, top up whenever the skin feels dry, and use more in autumn and winter. Choosing a moisturising product with no fragrance and no irritating ingredients matters more than worrying about "which brand to use".

The right way to bathe

The water temperature should be close to body temperature. Keep it to 5–10 minutes. Use a mild cleansing product. Do not scrub the skin. After washing, pat the skin dry gently with a towel and apply emollient (moisturizer) straight away.

When to see a doctor

If the affected skin area is large, sleep is affected, there is repeated oozing or infection, or there is no improvement after 2 weeks of proper care, you should see a doctor in the dermatology department, who will assess the treatment plan. The link between eczema in infants and young children and food allergy needs a doctor's judgement. Do not cut out foods blindly, as this can lead to malnutrition.
