Urticaria (hives) in children: how parents can observe and keep records

Children cannot always explain what they feel, so the details parents notice are often the key to judging the situation.

What to observe

  • Where the welts appear, what they look like, how far they spread, and how long they last
  • Whether there are signs of infection such as fever, sore throat, or diarrhoea
  • What the child ate, what medicines they took, and where they went or what they did before the episode
  • Whether there is swelling of the lips, a change in voice, coughing, or noisy breathing

How to keep clearer records

Take photos of the welts with your phone and note the time. Also write down briefly what the child ate, how they slept, and their temperature. Photos and times help the doctor judge the type and avoid relying on memory alone.

Management and when to see a doctor

If the itching is obvious, you can use a cold compress. Cut the nails short to avoid scratching the skin open. Give medicines as the doctor instructed, and do not increase or reduce the dose on your own. If there is difficulty breathing, tightness in the throat, repeated vomiting, or the child is clearly much less responsive, call 120 (the emergency number in China) at once and follow the emergency plan. If episodes keep coming back for more than a few weeks, see a doctor for assessment.
